Art Therapy & Retreats

What is Art Therapy?

Art Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of communication. It is a form of psychotherapy which has been well established in other countries, especially the United Kingdom (England) since the 1940’s. It is still relatively new in South Africa.

There is no need to have had previous experience or skill in art.

Artz Africa is not primarily concerned with making an artistic or analytical assessment of your image. The overall aim is to enable you to effect change and growth on a personal level through the use of art materials in a safe and facilitating atmosphere.

Art as a therapy has proven to offer people nationwide the opportunity for expression and communication and can be particularly helpful to those who find it hard to express their thoughts and feelings verbally.

Why Art and Colour Therapy?

-  Art and colour has the power to transform minds and change society. It is about more than just the creation of beautiful images;

- Art and colour is a part of our social, emotional, and spiritual development. The Arts allow for everyone, no matter how disadvantaged, a comforting and liberating space in which to navigate the challenges they face. It has been widely proven that art can play a profound role in helping people cope with crisis, and achieve mental and emotional stability.

- Art can easily be seen as a playful extravagance, but for our participants it proves to be an essential tool for healing, and it provides a way to articulate personal needs that would otherwise go unheard.

- Art and colour is a quiet but powerful method to affect change in the hearts and minds of those who experience it.

- Art and colour is widely recognized as an extremely valuable tool in working through past trauma, as well as a means to communicate hardship and create new purpose.

Art Therapy Workshops:

These workshops are designed for both mixed groups (male & female) as well as individuals.

Aims and Objectives:

- The aim of these workshops are to encourage the group attending to reclaim their 'power' that might have been lost which often is due to the pressures in todays life of demands and social expectations.

- To allow the group to experience the importance of 'playing and creating' once again. This would be done through various techniques that will be shared and then implemented during these workshops.

- To assist students to heal themselves through motivational techniques such as the use of Colour and Art Therapy. These techniques can assist groups to 'walk tall' even during times get tough of which they may feel there is no one they can turn to.

Each individual, no matter what their current or previous hurts may have been, will have the opportunity to find their 'subconscious' emotions through learning the technique of 'mind mapping' and other methods that will be taught during the duration of the workshops.
